Tektronix in Beaverton, Ore., and Fluke Corporation in Everett, Wa., have donated $100,000 to a five-year scholarship program at DeVry University to provide opportunities for the next generation of engineers and to strengthen the engineering and technology industries.
Lockheed Martin officials in Bethesda, Md., are investing in future engineers at the middle school and high school levels. The company has pledged to donate $1 million to the Denver School of Science and Technology, enabling the Colorado school to expand its science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum.
NASA has launched (pardon the pun) its second annual Lunabotics Mining Competition. The university-level competition was crafted to engage and retain students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The competition is going on now at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Students from universities in the U.S., Bangladesh, Canada, Columbia, and India have designed and built remote-controlled or autonomous excavators, called lunabots, which meet specific size and weight parameters and can collect and deposit at least 10 kilograms of lunar simulant within a period of 15 minutes. Be certain to visit the Command Post Community to learn which teams win scholarships.
