GE Fanuc introduces secure aviation network technology for safety critical avionics

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., 22 April 2009. GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms in Charlottesville, Va., is introducing a deterministic aerospace Ethernet technology for safety critical avionics applications called Time-Triggered Ethernet (TTEthernet), based on aviation network technology developed by TTTech Computertechnik AG of Vienna, Austria.

GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms in Charlottesville, Va., is introducing a deterministic aerospace Ethernet technology for safety critical avionics applications called Time-Triggered Ethernet (TTEthernet), based on aviation network technology developed by TTTech Computertechnik AG of Vienna, Austria.

TTEthernet technology is a scalable, high-bandwidth, fault tolerant, safety critical avionics data bus on TTEthernet, which allows for the DO 178B standard and DO 254 certification. The avionics databus is deterministic, so it has the ability to send and receive an information packet in a finite amount of time.

"Ethernet is the most pervasive communications technology in computing today with its high bandwidth, simplicity and low cost, however it does not natively have determinism – a characteristic that is absolutely required for safety-critical applications such as civilian aircraft," says Ben Daniel, avionics product manager at GE Fanuc. "TTEthernet addresses this need, and provides an exciting, open standards-based alternative to aging legacy technologies such as MIL-STD-1553 and ARINC-429."
