PALM BAY, Fla., 7 Sept. 2006. The DRS Technologies Sensors & Targeting Systems - Optronics Division in Palm Bay, Fla., won an $8.3 million contract to manufacture electro-optical modules for U.S. Army Bradley Fighting Vehicles.
DRS experts will provide TOW visual modules for the integrated sight unit on the TOW 2 tracking system on the armored combat vehicles. TOW stands for Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided missile system.
The TOW visual module is one of five line replaceable units (LRUs) of the integrated sight unit used in the TOW 2 subsystem. It detects and acquires armored targets, guiding BGM-71D TOW 2 series heavy anti-tank missiles to their targets.
The TOW 2 heavy anti-tank weapon is for anti-armor, anti-bunker, anti-fortification, and anti-amphibious landing roles. TOW is in service with more than 45 armed forces and is integrated on more than 15,000 ground, vehicle, and helicopter platforms worldwide.
The contract went to DRS from the U.S. Army Aviation & Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal, Ala. Product should start in November and continue through April 2008. For more information contact DRS online at www.drs.com.
