Lockheed Martin integrates RGB Spectrum video platform into F-35 training systems

RGB Spectrum's Zio platform distributes video across pilot cockpits, instructor stations and debrief rooms. Its recording and multiview playback capabilities enable instructors to monitor training visuals and review sessions after an exercise.

Key Highlights

  • Lockheed Martin selected RGB Spectrum’s Zio 2 platform for its F-35 Full Mission Simulator.
  • The Modified Mission Rehearsal Trainer can operate independently or connect with full-mission simulators for shared exercises.
  • Lockheed Martin reported an eight-device operational test in November 2024 and a 12-device demonstration at Luke Air Force Base in 2025.

ALAMEDA, Calif. - Lockheed Martin has integrated RGB Spectrum's Zio Video-over-IP platform into its F-35 pilot-training systems, including the Modified Mission Rehearsal Trainer (MMRT), to distribute, record, and replay video across simulation, instruction, and mission debriefing environments.

Lockheed Martin selected RGB Spectrum's Zio 2 platform for its F-35 Full Mission Simulator (FMS), RGB Spectrum said. The MMRT complements the FMS by providing a reduced-footprint training device that enables pilots to rehearse missions independently or connect with full-mission simulators for collaborative tactical exercises.

Connecting MMRT and FMS devices enables pilots to participate in shared simulated operations, including multi-aircraft tactical scenarios. The approach expands training capacity while reducing the physical infrastructure required compared with larger, fully immersive simulation facilities.

Lockheed Martin reported an eight-ship operational test connecting FMS and MMRT devices in November 2024 to demonstrate enhanced tactical training and threat simulation. In 2025, the company also reported connecting 12 pilot-training devices at Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., to demonstrate the scalability of its F-35 training system.

Zio tech

RGB Spectrum's Zio platform distributes video across pilot cockpits, instructor stations, and debrief rooms. Its recording and multiview playback capabilities enable instructors to monitor training visuals and review sessions after an exercise. Debriefing functions include frame-by-frame analysis and variable-speed playback for examining specific portions of a training session.

The video platform supports observing and reviewing simulated missions, complementing the simulation software and training systems that generate tactical scenarios and replicate aircraft operating environments.

"This will give F-35 pilots the scenarios and repetitions necessary to steepen tactical learning curves and provide a much-needed capability for our F-35 units," said Matthew "Ali" Olson, a retired U.S. Air Force F-35A pilot.

RGB Spectrum develops video distribution, recording, display, and control systems for military, government, and commercial applications.
