SBG Systems introduces upgraded Pulse-40 OEM inertial measurement unit

The new version expands the gyroscope measurement range to ±4,000 degrees per second and improves bias stability, long-term bias repeatability and scale-factor accuracy.

CARRIÈRES-SUR-SEINE, France - SBG Systems has introduced the second generation of its Pulse-40 OEM miniature tactical-grade inertial measurement unit (IMU), adding higher-rate gyroscope measurement, integrated magnetometers, lower latency, and enhanced vibration and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) resilience while maintaining the previous-generation device's form factor.

The Pulse-40 OEM measures 30 by 28 by 13.3 millimeters, weighs 19 grams, and typically consumes 0.3 watts. The IMU provides inertial data at rates up to 2 kHz and maintains the same mechanical interfaces and software integration approach as the original Pulse-40, according to SBG Systems.

The new version expands the gyroscope measurement range to ±4,000 degrees per second and improves bias stability, long-term bias repeatability and scale-factor accuracy. SBG Systems says the expanded dynamic range is intended for applications involving high rotational rates, including guidance and stabilization systems.

The IMU also incorporates three-axis magnetometers, providing nine degrees of freedom of inertial and magnetic sensing within the existing package.

An updated processing architecture reduces motion-to-output latency to as low as 1.5 milliseconds. The combination of low latency and output rates of up to 2 kHz is designed for guidance, stabilization, and control applications requiring rapid sensor measurements.

The Pulse-40 OEM also incorporates an integrated vibration-damping system and an updated electrical design intended to improve resistance to high-frequency vibration and electromagnetic disturbances. The company says the changes are intended to maintain inertial measurement performance in environments where vibration and electromagnetic interference can affect navigation and control accuracy.

A notable addition is real-time vibration spectrum monitoring. The IMU can analyze vibration from 4 Hz to 8 kHz and provide raw fast Fourier transform outputs and summarized vibration information. SBG Systems says the capability can be used to characterize mechanical vibration sources, support system integration and qualification, validate mechanical designs, and troubleshoot vibration-related problems without requiring separate vibration instrumentation.

The device retains continuous built-in test capabilities and a redundant sensor cluster architecture from the previous-generation Pulse-40.

SBG Systems says the redesigned hardware platform is also intended to improve manufacturing efficiency and production scalability while maintaining the device's existing form factor and integration characteristics.
