In 2017 Xilinx’s announcement of RFSoC technology changed the rules for designing high channel count, high performance data converter and processing systems in a small envelope. Adding RF-class converters to Xilinx’s already powerful MPSoC, ARM processor enhanced family of flagship FPGAs offered new possibilities for 5G applications, but also had significant impact in military and scientific systems. Now, almost 4 years after the RFSoC introduction, we look at how the technology has performed and where we expect it to go with Gen 3 and beyond.
