Gallium nitride (GaN) power amplifier for traveling wave tube TWT replacement in airborne X-Band pulsed radar applications offers self protection.

MELVILLE, N.Y. – Comtech PST in Melville, N.Y., is introducing the model BHCDP938988-4000 gallium nitride (GaN) power amplifier for traveling wave tube TWT replacement in airborne X-Band pulsed radar applications.

The AB linear design operates from 9.3 to 9.8 GHz frequency range over an instantaneous bandwidth of 500 MHz. The amplifier design features self protection for load voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), duty factor, pulse width, temperature, as well as a graceful degradation in case of a RF power module failure.

A mean time between failures increase of 10 times that of a the TWT comes from improved reliability and lower maintenance costs. Custom configurations and features are available as well as specific power levels up to 16 kilowatts.

Features of the rugged power unit include high-output power dynamic range; efficiency; RF input and output sample detectors; pulse width and duty factor protection; remote status/control Ethernet interface; ruggedized for harsh environmental applications; customization available; RF modular combining 2 to 16 kilowatts; and graceful degradation.

The power unit operates in temperatures of 0 to 150 degrees Celsius at the baseplate; meets MIL-STD-810F for resistance to shock and vibration; operates at altitudes to 50,000 feet; measures 12.5 by 13 by 9 inches; and weighs 46 pounds.
