AGEC to provide static frequency converters for power electronics needs of military aircraft

LAKEHURST, N.J. – U.S. Navy avionics experts needed power electronics static frequency converters for various military aircraft. They found their solution from Aviation Ground Equipment Corp. (AGEC) in Freeport, N.Y.

Officials of the Naval Air warfare Center Aircraft Division in Lakehurst, N.J., announced a $11.6 million five-year contract to AGEC last Thursday to supply as many as 59 static frequency converters for various aircraft in support of the Navy and the government of Japan.

AGEC's static frequency converters change multiple input voltages ranging from 208 to 600 volts AC at 50/60 Hz to aircraft outputs of 115 volts AC at 400 Hz, 270 volts DC, and 28 volts DC.

The company builds two kinds of static frequency converters: the SFC Cart, and the Hangar Module. The SFC CART convert 440 and 220 volts AC at 50/60 Hz input power a choice of as many as three outputs, including 115 volts AC at 400 Hz, 270 volts DC, and 28 volts DC output power.

AGEC builds these rugged carts to withstand a range of applications from shipboard environments to laboratories. The Navy uses them aboard aircraft carriers and other large vessels capable of accommodating fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

The company's Hangar Module has an integrated power frequency converter, and provides as many as three modes of power output: 270 volts DC output, 400 Hz output, and 28 volts DC output. It also offers multiple unit output paralleling and remote operation for use in hangar or laboratory environments.
