Infineon introduces 12-volt automotive eFuse with integrated wire protection

Infineon says the eFuse can isolate faults within microseconds while providing current measurement to help avoid oversizing wiring compared with conventional fuses.

MUNICH - Infineon Technologies AG has introduced the SPOC Wire Guard BTS80009 SWPx 1ES, a 12-volt automotive electronic fuse (eFuse) with an SPI interface designed for automotive power-distribution applications.

The device combines a protected high-side switch with integrated I²t wire protection, programmable protection parameters, current sensing, and diagnostic functions. Infineon says the eFuse can isolate faults within microseconds while providing current measurement to help avoid oversizing wiring compared with conventional fuses.

The device includes an idle mode that reduces power consumption to a few microamps for permanently powered loads while maintaining protection. Its 24-bit SPI interface supports daisy-chain operation, reducing the number of microcontroller I/O ports required.

Software can adjust protection and configuration parameters for different vehicle variants. The device also provides real-time status information and pre-warning indicators for system diagnostics and lifecycle monitoring.

The SPOC Wire Guard BTS80009 SWPx 1ES is offered as a Safety Element out of Context (SEooC) for applications up to ASIL-D under ISO 26262. An integrated nonvolatile memory enables configuration of an application-specific safe state, while the device can respond autonomously to supply-voltage drops caused by load faults. Its single-channel architecture is designed to limit fault propagation to other outputs.

The first SPOC Wire Guard device is available in four variants, designated A, I, P and F, with support for currents up to 34.5 amperes. Infineon says the device can replace combinations of gate-driver ICs, MOSFETs, and shunt resistors in some applications, reducing PCB area.
