New Scale Technologies introduces integrated optical motion-control platforms
VICTOR, N.Y. - New Scale Technologies has introduced its Smart Optical Platform product line, integrating precision motion-control mechanisms, drive electronics, and closed-loop control firmware into compact positioning modules for electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) systems.
The modules simplify integrating optical functions into aerospace and defense systems under size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) constraints. Applications include uncrewed aircraft, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) payloads, targeting systems and autonomous platforms.
The Smart Optical Platforms support functions such as optical focusing, beam steering, image protection, calibration and optical switching. Their integrated electronics eliminate the need for separate drive and control electronics, while 3.3-volt operation and serial-command interfaces simplify system integration.
Two featured technologies are the Smart Focus + Shutter module and the Smart Optical Shutter. The focus module provides positioning in 0.5-micrometer steps across a 1,500-micrometer range, with a focus movement speed of 5 millimeters per second. Its integrated shutter has open and closed positions and a specified 90-degree movement time of 70 milliseconds.
The Smart Optical Shutter uses a rotary blade with programmable positions and continuous 360-degree rotation. Its specified movement time for a 90-degree rotation is 70 milliseconds.
The platforms use piezoelectric motors, which enable compact positioning mechanisms with fine motion control and low power consumption. New Scale Technologies says the modules also provide zero-power position holding, reducing power consumption and thermal load when maintaining a position.
Engineers can configure the platforms with motion-control components suited to their optical applications, combining multiple functions while reducing wiring and the number of separate controllers.
