TOBYHANNA, Pa., 30 March 2006. U.S. Army Secretary Francis Harvey has designated the Tobyhanna Army Depot as the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) center of excellence for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (C4ISR), electronics, avionics, and missile guidance and control.
Harvey made the designation March 8 in a letter to the commander the Army Materiel Command at Fort Belvoir, Va. Tobyhanna's operations, based in Tobyhanna, Pa., are part of Army Materiel Command.
Tobyhanna already had been designated as the DOD center of excellence for electronics. The depot is the largest electronics facility in the world, and handles maintenance, repair, and overhaul of all Army, Navy, and Air Force C4ISR equipment.
In his letter, Harvey also authorized Tobyhanna as a DOD center of industrial and technical excellence to enter into public-private partnerships for maintenance of C4ISR, electronics, avionics, and missile guidance equipment.
The depot handles repair and overhaul of all U.S. Army radios, circuit cards, radar systems, computers, satellite equipment, optoelectronic sensors, and many other pieces of electronics, as well as services U.S. Air Force ground-based communications and air traffic control systems and Air Force and Navy Sidewinder and Maverick guided missiles.
In 2005 the depot performed more than 6 million man-hours of activity, and about $600 million in business for the DOD. In addition to repairing, refurbishing, and upgrading DOD systems, Tobyhanna is a certified warrantee repair facility for Panasonic, Dell, Micron, FPC, Sun, and Itronix electronic equipment.
Assigned to the depot are 3,520 civilian government employees, 576 industry contractors, and about 20 uniformed military personnel.
