Qorvo introduces X-band front-end module for phased array radar applications

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Qorvo Inc., of Greensboro, N.C., introduced an X-band transmit/receive front-end module designed for phased array radar systems that combines transmit amplification, receive functionality, and switching in a single package for defense and aerospace applications.

The QPF5012 operates across the 8.5-10.5 GHz X-band and delivers 10 watts of saturated transmit power, 42% power-added efficiency, and a 2.1 dB receive noise figure in a 7-by-5-millimeter package.

Front-end modules perform signal amplification, transmit/receive switching, and low-noise receive functions at each element or subarray within an AESA radar. Improving efficiency reduces power consumption and cooling requirements, while a lower receiver noise figure can increase detection sensitivity for weak targets.

The integrated module is intended for active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar systems and multifunction sensors where size, weight, power, and thermal management are important design considerations. According to the company, integrating transmit and receive functions into a single module reduces component count while maintaining RF output power and efficiency across changing antenna load conditions.

The device is designed to provide consistent RF performance across varying antenna scan angles in electronically steered arrays, where impedance changes can affect amplifier performance.

Qorvo said the module combines RF design, multi-technology packaging, and manufacturing technologies into a single front-end architecture intended to simplify radar subsystem integration.
