Specialists at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center in Aberdeen, Md., needed a fast data network architecture to collect and distribute military equipment test data, such as battle tank acceleration and weapons accuracy, around the country. So they chose gigabit ethernet technology from MRV Communications in Chatsworth, Calif.
"We`ll be providing live audio and video to our customers so they can actually watch the tests over the network from afar," says John Ruhl, chief information officer at Aberdeen Test Center, which tests tanks, munitions, and other military equipment.
"Gigabit ethernet gives us broad enough bandwidth to move that kind of massive data throughput throughout the organization," Ruhl says. "We are very pleased with the results and plan to expand our use of gigabit ethernet to other applications."
Existing MRV gigabit ethernet applications are with the company`s NBase MegaSwitch II, 10/100 ethernet switches with GigaPort modules that connect as many as eight ports at speeds of 10 to 100 megabits per second for each port to a communications backbone. - J.K.
