L-3 boosts radar expertise for smart weapons, EW, and unmanned vehicles with Mustang buy

NEW YORK, 16 Jan. 2014. Executives of L-3 Communications in New York are boosting the company's radar technology for smart weapons, electronic warfare (EW), and unmanned vehicles with their acquisition of Mustang Technology Group, L.P. in Plano, Texas.

NEW YORK, 16 Jan. 2014. Executives of L-3 Communications in New York are boosting the company's radar technology for smart weapons, electronic warfare (EW), and unmanned vehicles with their acquisition of Mustang Technology Group, L.P. in Plano, Texas.

L-3 officials are renaming the company to L-3 Mustang Technology, which will focus on radar-based sensors and systems used in precision-guided weapons, electronic warfare, unmanned systems and other military applications.

Mustang has expertise in radar systems engineering; RF electronics; radar signal processing; digital electronics; real-time software development; concepts of operations; systems engineering; hardware design; software design; prototype production; guidance and control; algorithm development; simulation and analysis; low-cost, ruggedized electronics; test, planning, and execution; and data analysis.

L-3 Mustang Technology offers software-defined radar and other RF sensors, proprietary capabilities in radar-based seeker, proximity fuze, hostile fire indicating and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) sensors.

L-3 leaders say they expect the business to generate $36 million in sales for calendar 2013. L-3 Mustang has about 115 employees, and supplies the U.S. military, government agencies, and prime contractors.

“Mustang adds key capabilities, technical synergies, proprietary technologies and new customers to L-3’s existing precision engagement business in our Electronic Systems segment,” says Michael Strianese, L-3’s chairman, president, and CEO.

The Mustang acquisition "expands L-3’s DOD [U.S. Department of Defense] and classified business base, and we look forward to integrating Mustang’s technologies into L-3’s existing proprietary fuzing and ordnance and unmanned systems products," Strianese says.
