MEXICO CITY, 5 Sept. 2012. Mexican flag carrier Aeroméxico in Mexico City is joining hands with Delta Air Lines in Atlanta to build an aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) center to be operated by the two commercial aviation carriers at the Intercontinental Airport in Querétaro, Mexico, northwest of Mexico City.
The Delta-Aeroméxico MRO heavy maintenance facility will be able to handle seven aircraft at once, and will host MRO work now done at the Guadalajara International Airport, Delta officials say.
The two commercial carriers will invest equal amounts of money in the project, and will expand MRO capabilities for Delta and Aeroméxico aircraft, as well as for other carriers, airline officials say.
This project represents one of the most important investments in aviation infrastructure in Mexico, officials say. Delta acquired a 4.17 percent stake in Grupo Aeroméxico in June.
Aeroméxico operates an aircraft fleet that includes Boeing 777, 767, and 737 long-haul passenger aircraft, as well as the Embraer 145, 170, and 190 regional aircraft. The airline has announced plans to buy 90 Boeing 737 Max jet airliners and 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Aeroméxico offers 550 daily flights in Mexico, the U.S., Canada, Central and South America, Europe, and Asia.
Delta, which offers more than 1,000 weekly flights between Latin America and the U.S., operates a fleet of more than 700 aircraft, including the Boeing 757, Boeing 767, Airbus A330, MD88, MD90, and Boeing 717.
