Aerocivil and IATA optimize Colombian airspace with Airbus ProSky technology
PARIS, 25 June 2015. Aerocivil officials are investing in airspace and ground optimization at El Dorado International Airport in Bogota, Columbia, one of the world’s 50 busiest airports serving more than 27 million passengers annually. To increase efficiency at and around the airport and to prepare the Colombian airspace to be prepared for tomorrow’s demands, Aerocivil partnered with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Airbus ProSky, the air traffic management (ATM) subsidiary of Airbus.
“Bogota International Airport, as one of the major hubs of Latin America for passengers and cargo traffic, is facing a tremendous growth. We are confident that our work with IATA and Airbus ProSky will prepare an efficient and sustainable airspace that will meet future air traffic demands over the coming years while we are expecting the implementation of the new airport,” says an Aerocivil spokesperson.
IATA contracted Airbus ProSky to redesign the airspace of Bogota International airport, aligned with international best practices and ICAO regulations. In addition to its proven and recognized expertise in Performance Based Navigation (PBN) airspaces implementation, Airbus ProSky will utilize fast time and real-time simulation tools, such as its Shared Virtual Sky (SVS) platform, that were first developed for SESAR JU demonstration projects. The key to success will be to deliver a new concept of operations and provide operational training before the new airspace goes live. Coupled with its partnership with Aerocivil for the implementation of an Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) advanced solution, this implementation makes Airbus ProSky the prime partner for large airspace optimization programs.

Aerocivil and Airbus ProSky had previously worked together to optimize the airspace demand and capacity balancing within Colombia through its ATFM system. This solution, combined with airspace redesign and ground optimization, will allow the country to increase efficiency and better meet capacity demands while the airlines’ fleets are significantly growing in Colombia.
Key to the project’s success is Airbus ProSky’s ability to work with all stakeholders in order to design and implement the new airspace. Airbus ProSky will rely on a close collaboration with the several Aerocivil departments as well as engage with the civilian and military airspace users.
