MUNICH - Etihad Cargo, the logistics division of commercial operator Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi, UAE, has introduced a new shipment tracking service that provides real-time visibility into cargo conditions and location, a move the airline says will boost transparency and reliability in global air freight.

The service, called SmartTrack, was officially launched during Air Cargo Europe 2025 in Munich. According to Etihad Cargo, it is the first solution of its kind in the industry to offer advanced tracking capabilities using smart label technology.

Collaborative effort

Developed in collaboration with California-based Tag-N-Trac, the SmartTrack label utilizes a combination of cellular, GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connectivity to collect and transmit data regarding a shipment’s precise location, temperature, humidity, light exposure, shock, and tilt. The system is designed to support time- and condition-sensitive shipments, such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, and other high-value goods.

Etihad Cargo launches AI-powered solutions for airfreight operations

"This launch represents a transformation in how we deliver even more peace of mind to our customers," said Stanislas Brun, Chief Cargo Officer at Etihad Airways. "By combining simplicity, intelligence and automation, we are reinforcing our commitment to smarter, more transparent logistics."

SmartTrack integrates with Etihad Cargo’s digital platforms, providing users access to live maps, milestone tracking, and complete sensor data. The label can function for up to 30 days and is designed to minimize waste and avoid return logistics, supporting the company’s sustainability goals.

Tag-N-Trac CEO Venu Gutlapalli praised the collaboration. "We knew we were setting a new standard in cargo visibility with our smart label-based RELATIVITY platform, empowering Etihad with the information they need, when they need it, across the globe," he said.

SmartTrack underwent field testing along key global trade routes and was found to deliver consistently accurate data in both air and ground transit environments. The system will be available to Etihad Cargo customers via the carrier’s website and mobile app starting October 2025, as part of Etihad’s ongoing digital transformation initiative.
