COTS open-systems avionics computers for distributed control, and data conversion introduced by Astronics

Three COTS products offer varying capability for use on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and ground vehicles.

EAST AURORA, N.Y. – Astronics Corp. in East Aurora, N.Y., is introducing the NG family of flexible, compact, 64-bit avionics I/O computers for problem solving and technology insertion in areas such as mission computing, distributed control, and avionics data conversion.

The NG family has three commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products with varying capability for use on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and ground vehicles.

These low-size, weight, and power consumption (SWaP) systems include multi-protocol avionics I/O coupled with a high-throughput Ethernet backbone for inter-device communication and compatibility with a variety of avionics systems.

The NG family meets the demands of U.S. military open-systems business and technical strategies such as Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) and Open Mission Systems (OMS).

The NG family members are:

  • the NG3 series avionics I/O computers with 64-bit processing and audio/video, for demanding applications;
  • the NG2 avionics I/O controllers with the same processing power as the NG3, but in a smaller size with a reduction of I/O, when low SWaP is critical; and
  • the NG1 avionics I/O converters that are compact and optimized for converting avionics protocol data to Ethernet for interfacing to the NG3/NG2 or other avionics systems.

The NG3 has the latest Generation Intel Atom E3950 64-bit quad-core processor with cyber security; a rugged, maximum-density, modular architecture with MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, 708, 717, discrete I/O, and Ethernet; cyber security with built-in tools to help users build proprietary security solutions, including secure storage and operation, security SSD has and flexible write-protect capability.; two solid-state drives for data storage; and a Mini PCI Express expansion slot.
