ARLINGTON, Va. – U.S. military researchers will brief industry next month on a project for new testing methods for radiation-induced single-event effects (SEE) of next-generation electronics.
Officials of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va., will host proposers day briefings from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on 13 July 2023 on the upcoming Advanced Sources for Single-event Effect Radiation Testing (ASSERT) project.
ASSERT seeks to develop SEE testing for radiation-hardened electronics that involves beams that simultaneously achieve long range and high-linear energy transfer in silicon while penetrating packaging and metallization; beam optics to achieve spot diameters that replicate the narrow charge track of a heavy ion while also enabling large-area scanning; sources that predict the heavy-ion response across electronic components; and compact and cost-effective sources that can be incorporated into the development process.
Designing with radiation effects in mind particularly is an issue for electronics that will operate in naturally occurring space radiation, ranging from short-duration low-Earth-orbit satellites, to long-duration geosynchronous-orbit communications and surveillance satellites, and to deep-space probes. Radiation effects also can influence electronics that could be subject to the effects of nuclear explosions.

Briefings will be at the DARPA Conference Center, 675 N. Randolph St., in Arlington, Va. Those who would like to attend should register no later than 7 July 2023.
This meeting is to provide information on the ASSERT program, address questions from potential proposers, and help potential proposers to share their capabilities and ideas for teaming arrangements. A formal ASSERT broad-agency announcement should be released on or about 13 July 2023.
