ECHING, Germany, 7 Oct. 2008. Embedded computing provider Kontron AG in Eching, Germany, is acquiring the Intel Corp. Communication Rackmount Server operation in Columbia, S.C., in a move to enhance Kontron's telecommunications and enterprise computer expertise.

The move is Kontron's third notable company acquisition in the last three years. Earlier this year Kontron acquired Thales Computers SA, a subsidiary of French company the Thales Group, and Kontron acquired Dolch Computer Systems, a rugged computer maker, in 2005.

With the acquisition, Kontron is taking over the Intel Communication Rackmount Server operation's 1U and 2U carrier-grade rackmount and IP network security server products. Kontron officials say they expect the acquisition to close soon.

The Intel carrier-grade rackmount and network server operation, centered in Columbia, S.C., and Penang, Malaysia, should generate $40 million in revenues in fiscal 2009, Kontron officials say. The group has about 70 employees and has expertise in high-density mechanical and electronic design, thermal and vibration analysis, and uninterruptible operations.

The Intel communication servers acquisition will complement Kontron's offerings in AdvancedTCA and MicroTCA communication platforms and industrial rackmount servers for tier 1 and tier 2 telecommunications and network equipment providers.
