Army picks QinetiQ to develop enabling technologies for next-generation networked night-vision sensors

Project seeks to present battlefield and air data on heads-up displays with enhanced resolution for warfighters in vehicles, on foot, and in aircraft.

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. – U.S. Army night-vision experts needed a company to develop digital sensors, image processing, and displays that are networked through an open standards architecture for future night-vision systems. They found their solution from QinetiQ Inc. in Lorton, Va.

Officials of the Army Contracting Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., announced a $92.7 million four-year contract to QinetiQ on Thursday for the Digital Night Vision Technology (DNVT).

The DNVT project seeks to move Army night-vision equipment away from analog technology to fully digital networked night-vision devices that fuse visible through longwave infrared imagers, reconfigurable high-resolution full-color displays, image-processing hardware and algorithms, and open-systems standards to enable a new generation of augmented reality for nighttime situational awareness and targeting.

The project seeks to present battlefield and air data to the warfighter on a heads-up display with enhanced resolution, sensitivity and sensing, vision, and laser hardening for warfighters in vehicles, on foot, and in aircraft.

DNVT will capitalize on more than two decades of military research into digital visible, low-light, and infrared cameras, and image processing.

DNVT focuses on sensors, hardware, and software, networking, and integration with ground and aviation systems. DNVT will substantially enhance the warfighter’s situational awareness and decision making.

QinetiQ will develop DNVT components and systems using digital imaging, display, processing, and network architecture technologies to support military operations.
