Metis Engineering introduces CAN-based air quality sensor
BRISTOL, U.K. - Metis Engineering has introduced Air Wise, a CAN-based sensor designed to monitor air-quality and environmental conditions in transport and industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
Air Wise measures absolute pressure, air temperature, nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon dioxide (CO2), relative humidity, dew point temperature and impact shock, with data transmitted over a configurable CAN bus.
The sensor integrates with HVAC CAN-bus systems through a 5-pin Molex Nano-Fit power connector. Metis supplies a CAN database (DBC) file with the sensor to support integration with CAN-compatible systems.
Air Wise includes an intelligent monitoring mode that continuously monitors environmental conditions without transmitting data over the CAN bus until a user-defined threshold is exceeded. When a threshold is breached, the sensor switches to active mode and can activate a 500-milliamp low-side drive output to initiate a system response.
The monitoring mode is intended for applications such as HVAC systems in which elevated concentrations of VOCs or CO2 can require a system response while minimizing unnecessary CAN-bus traffic during normal operation.
Metis says Air Wise has been tested to automotive standards including ISO 7637-2:2011 for electrical transient immunity and ISO 16750-2:2012 and ISO 16750-4:2010 for environmental and mechanical testing. An optional three-axis accelerometer provides measurement ranges up to plus or minus 24 g.
The sensor is designed for applications including passenger and commercial vehicles, off-highway machinery, autonomous vehicles and pods, and compressed-air systems. Air Wise is also compatible with the company's Nano Development Kit for desktop evaluation and analysis.
