INDIAN HEAD, Md., 3 July 2013. U.S. Navy munitions experts needed Micro-Electromechanical System (MEMS)-based retard sensors to function as prototypes to measure deceleration in a bomb fuze for Navy air weapon applications. They found their solution from Meggitt PLC in Bournemouth, England.
Researchers at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division in Indian Head, Md., announced their intention to award a non-competitive firm fixed price purchase order to Meggitt for the MEMS retard sensors. The value of the contract has yet to be negotiated.
Although Navy officials say they are not necessarily asking for competitive proposals, they are inviting companies with similar MEMS technology to submit capability statements no later than 10 July 2013.
Companies interested should email capability statements to the Navy's Jodi Fields at [email protected]. Navy researchers will use the information they receive to decide whether or not to conduct a competitive procurement, officials say.
