FARNBOROUGH, England, 12 Feb. 2010. Aerospace and defense giant BAE Systems headquartered in Farnborough, England, is considering the elimination of 287 jobs in its United Kingdom military units due to downturns in the company's maritime patrol aircraft and nuclear attack submarine businesses, company officials announced Thursday.
BAE Systems executives plan to eliminate 41 jobs at its Chadderton site near Manchester, England, and 16 jobs at the Royal Air Force Kilos base in Forres, Scotland.
The job cuts come at Chadderton and Kilos following the British government's plan to withdraw the Nimrod MR2 reconnaissance and maritime patrol aircraft force 12 months early, as well as slow the introduction of its replacement, the Nimrod MRA4.
"We have to respond to the changes in the UK's defense program, explains Kevin Taylor, managing director of military air solutions at BAE Systems.
Meanwhile, executives at BAE Systems Submarine Solutions in Barrow-in-Furness, England, plan to cut 230 jobs following a review of its current and future workload. Submarine Solutions is building the Royal Navy's Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarine.
"These steps are regrettable but necessary to ensure a sustainable business," says John Hudson, managing director at BAE Systems Submarine Solutions. "We have a responsibility to manage our cost base to remain competitive and meet our customers' future requirements."
BAE Systems Submarine Solutions employs about 5,000 people across nine locations in the United Kingdom. For more information contact BAE Systems online at www.baesystems.com.
