For standard applications, rod end surfaces are polished flat to within 1/10 of a wave (632.8 nm) and parallel to within 10 arc seconds. After fabrication and inspection, thin film anti-reflection coating of a material such as MgF2 is applied to each transmission surface, reducing the reflectance at the specified wavelength to less than 0.15%.
