Edmund Optics introduces point-source microscope for optical alignment
BARRINGTON, N.J. - Edmund Optics has introduced the Point Source Microscope (PSM), a portable, USB-powered instrument designed to align, inspect, and measure optical systems with precision. The company says the instrument combines a full-field video microscope, autostigmatic microscope, and autocollimator in a single device.
The PSM enables alignment based on optical features rather than mechanical references. Edmund Optics says the instrument provides sensitivity approaching interferometer levels for precise centering and focusing along the true optical axis, potentially allowing less stringent mechanical tolerances for optics and mounts.
In addition to optical alignment, the PSM can measure radius of curvature and assess lens orientation. The instrument also can operate as an autocollimator when its microscope objective is removed.
PSMAlign software provides quantitative measurement data for repeatable verification during optical assembly and inspection. Edmund Optics says the system can be configured for research and development, production, incoming inspection, and quality-assurance applications.
