Astronics introduces 60W USB-C cabin power system for commercial aircraft

The outlet is intended for installation in passenger seats as well as galleys, flight decks, and crew-rest areas.

EAST AURORA, N.Y. - Astronics Corp. in East Aurora, N.Y., has introduced a new dual USB Type-C in-seat power outlet designed to support the increasing power requirements of passenger electronic devices aboard commercial aircraft.

The company's EmPower 1327-27 outlet provides up to 60 watts of combined power through two USB-C ports, enabling passengers to charge laptops, tablets, smartphones, and other portable electronic devices during flight.

According to Astronics, the unit incorporates intelligent power-management technology that can deliver the full 60 watts to a single connected device or distribute power between two devices when both ports are in use.

The outlet is intended for installation in passenger seats as well as galleys, flight decks, and crew-rest areas. Astronics said the design maintains the same form factor as previous EmPower outlets, allowing compatibility with existing seat cutouts and simplifying retrofit installations.

Additional features include a blue LED backlight for low-light visibility, customizable faceplate options, and a ruggedized design intended to withstand commercial aviation operating environments.

The company said the outlet complies with FAA and EASA certification requirements and is designed to support aircraft manufacturer line-fit installation programs.

Astronics says that as passenger demand for higher-power charging capabilities continues to grow, airlines and cabin-equipment suppliers are increasingly adopting USB-C-based power systems capable of supporting power-hungry devices such as laptop computers.

Astronics manufactures cabin power, connectivity, lighting, avionics, and test systems for commercial and military aerospace applications.
