Silicon Sensing is a world market leader in inertial sensing.

Specialising in silicon micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, the company’s inertial products are based around its own unique, patented sensor design - and every sensor is manufactured at the company’s state-of-the-art foundry.

Ultra-reliable gyroscopes, accelerometers and IMUs combine precise, sustained performance, even in extreme environments, with low size, weight and power consumption. This makes them ideally suited to many critical, but space-constrained, aerospace and defense applications – including platform stabilisation and guidance, unmanned vehicle control, navigation (on land, in the air or at sea) and precision surveying and mapping.

The product range features gyrosopes and IMUs that deliver tactical-grade performance comparable to typical FOG-based products combined with the rugged reliability, affordability and compact size of MEMS technology.

Right now, the engineering team at Silicon Sensing is developing the next generation of inertial products that will deliver navigation-grade performance in a MEMS-based product for the first time.

Headquartered in Plymouth, UK and Amagasaki, Japan, Silicon Sensing was formed in 1999 and is jointly owned by Collins Aerospace and Sumitomo Precision Products. Collins Aerospace traces its heritage in gyroscopes and inertial sensors back to the Sperry Gyroscope Company, founded in 1913, giving this half of the venture an extraordinary depth of expertise in inertial systems and their deployment in real-world applications. Sumitomo Precision Products, based in Amagasaki, Japan, brings its extensive skills-base in the fabrication of high-performance silicon MEMS.
